Almost all sports seasons go through their highs and lows. Our 2008-09 wrestling season was certainly no exception to that. Our conference was very strong this year and the result was a 1-6 record in dual meets (7th overall). However, the Raiders went 8-8 in dual meets outside of conference, finishing the dual meet season at 9-14. The pinnacle of the season as a team came at the West DePere Multi-Dual where Kiel brought home a second place trophy. A few of Kiel’s wrestlers accomplished milestones individually on the season as well. Logan Lau and Jose Sandoval became members of the 50 Wins Club this year, and Tim Halverson tied the single season pins record with 22. Other individual highlights on the season included Jose Sandoval making the finals in two difficult tournaments including Kewaunee and Freedom, as well as having several undefeated wrestlers in multi-dual events including Tim Halverson, Trevor Casper, Evan Grybush, David Mueller, and Jose Sandoval. In addition, Kiel hosted the EWC Conference Tournament this year and also crowned a new conference champion. Jose Sandoval won a thrilling heavyweight match over Kewaskum’s Matt Buker to capture the gold in front of the hometown crowd. Tim Halverson and David Mueller were second place finishers on the day as well. |

At the regional tournament, Kiel fared well but couldn’t match Sheboygan Falls and Valders as a team. Kiel had four qualifiers for the sectional tournament including first place finisher Tim Halverson and second place finishers David Mueller, Derek Fritsch, and Jose Sandoval. Ethan Field narrowly missed qualifying with a third place finish, while four other Raiders placed fourth. Our sectional became tougher once again this year with the addition of Port Washington. The competition there seems to get better and better. Tim Halverson wrestled well on the day, placing third and earning his way to the state wrestling tournament -- something few freshmen are able to experience. David Mueller, Derek Fritsch, and Jose Sandoval all battled hard but fell short of the trip to Madison. At the state tournament, Tim grappled with Austyn Alt of River Valley in the first round and lost by a score of 9-0. Although the state tournament ended early for Tim, he had a fantastic season and has a great opportunity to do great things in this sport. All six senior wrestlers were members of the team for their entire high school career -- that dedication and leadership will certainly be missed. Next year, Kiel will turn to a strong junior class to fulfill that lost leadership, as well as a potentially large incoming freshman class to fill weight classes and provide depth as a team. |
